Bronx Community College is at the center of challenges facing the U.S. • The U.S. is behind 9 other nations in completion of higher education (Winning the Future (n.d.) slides 10 - 11 • 52% of jobs will require higher education by 2019 • President Obama calls for 10 million additional Associates Degrees

  3. Bronx Community College Organization BCC is comprehensive and offers over 30 academic programs on a beautiful 30-acre campus. Science. Technology and Math are an increasing emphasis Programs/ Offerings at BCC • Community Programs/ ESL and GED instruction to adults • Arts and Sciences/ Associates Degrees • Center for Sustainable Energy/ Instruction in biofuels and photovoltaics • Continuing Professional Studies/ Vocational training • Office of Instructional Technology/ Workshops and programs

Scenarios Undesirable • Many physical colleges will no longer exist in 30 years • Educators must prepare students for professions that do not yet exist • Educators will not have secure positions • Teachers could be replaced by software or robots Desirable • Technology will make higher education available to all economic classes • The achievement gap will close • Technology will allow visual interaction between student to teacher from distance • Human interaction between teachers and students will be valued in physical and virtual classrooms • Environmental gains will result from less consumption of natural resources

Scanning • Public Policy - Immigration reform may increase funding for ESL instruction • Economic - Affordability of MOOCs may make higher education available to all economic classes and create new wealth • Social and Demographic - Increased immigration, globalization and job growth in service fields will increase demand for English instruction • Technology – Software can allow students to proceed at individualized levels, as in gaming

The technologically enhanced physical ESL classroom • Students will listen and speak in small groups. • Robotic teacher assistant will facilitate and correct. • Technology will free students and teachers to be more creative. • Technology will enhance, not subsume. • Blended physical and online classroom instruction will create synergy.

Challenges and opportunities of blended education Challenges • Lack of immigration reform, funding • Literacy, education level of culturally and linguistically diverse populations (CLDs) • Subsumption in technology, addiction Opportunities • Opening of accessibility to education to disadvantaged populations and CLDs • Natural language acquisition by traditional human interaction • Creation of wealth, sustainable tax base • End of poverty? • Enhanced American global competitiveness

  9. Call to action • Seek input from community and students • Construct technologically enhanced traditional classrooms • Develop curricula that creates synergy between virtual and physical classrooms • Prepare as quickly as technology is advancing
