  1. January 13, 2010 Agenda Writing Prompt Which is better/more fair/more effective? Like a membership fee • Writing Prompt • Go over homework • Feudalism review • Serf to King game Goal: What societal conditions lead to feudalism?

  2. Feudalism Review – pop quiz • Describe the chaos of the Dark Ages? Why was there chaos? Give three examples of things that were broken or ineffective. • How does one become a noble (way back at the beginning)? • Why do political leaders want the church’s approval?

  3. Feudalism Game • Everyone gets a part! • You can trade parts until the simulation begins. • You are graded on participation. Grumbling and complaining that is out of character will cost you points!

  4. Bishop KING Count Duke Lord Knight Lord Knight Serfs 1-4 Serfs 5-9 Serfs 10-14 Serfs 5-19

  5. Activity – Do not eat your candy!!!! If you are a serf you need to go walk up and down the stairs 3 times. I’m not kidding. Everyone else find a comfortable spot. Stair climbing represents harvesting the crops.

  6. The crops are in • Everyone gets 10 pennies to represent their crops. • For easy accounting, keep the pennies you started with separate from the pennies you get from your vassals.

  7. Time to pay up • Serfs spend some of their time working for their lords, so much of the harvest belongs to him. Each serf needs to pay his lord or knight 8 pennies.

  8. Pay it up • Lords and knights owe allegiance and taxes to their lords (the Count and the Duke). Each knight and lord needs to pay 6 pennies for each 8 collected from the serfs. For example, if you have 3 serfs under you, you owe your lord 18 pennies.

  9. Now for the king • The Count and the Duke still owe the king. For every 6 pieces you collected from your vassal you need to pay the king 4.

  10. The church collects its due… • Serfs owe one penny • Knights and Lords owe 2 • Count and Duke owe 3 • King owes 4

  11. Invasion. • I’m a neighboring bad guy. Knights and lords owe me one penny. • This penny represents their cost of providing protection to their serfs.
