  3. “The inherent social exclusion, which has been pervasive throughout Peru’s history, along with machismo, manipulation and corruption... have all led to a situation wherein citizens- and especially- women are marginalized from equitable public debate” (Moser, p. 182, 2003). Historical Context

  4. Aftereffects of systematic destruction of Incan culture by Spanish conquistadores (Pizarro). • Incans based economy off trade/service not money • Exploitation of natural resources by Spanish • Different climate regions facilitate agriculture. • Spanish is now the official language but many Peruvians also speak their native Quechan language. • Political Unrest: Fujimori was president from 1990-2000 but his term was filled with controversy (ran for multiple terms, fake votes, embezzlement) but he is also credited with reducing influence of terrorist groups and improving the economic standing of the country. • Current president (since 2011) OllanteHumala has succeeded in growing the economy so far and the people are hopeful for more implementation of social programs as well.

Migration to larger cities for work • Except for mining of natural resources in the Andes • Need for stronger infrastructure to encourage investment in poorer areas • Inequality is still very apparent • Changes in family systems • Unequal distribution of power in economic and political systems • 16% poverty rates in Lima but 67% in rural Andes (Lima Easy: The Lima Guide). What’s Happening Now?

ProJoven: (since 1996) • Run by the Peruvian Ministry of Labor • Program that provides job training to low income areas of youth • Promotes gender equality by encouraging female participation in male-dominated areas • They are able to break cycles of unemployment by focusing on high risk areas. • Some reports claim low completion rates “Women who receive the opportunity to participate equally in the labor market benefit disproportionately more than men” (Nopo, Robles & Saavedra, p. 35, 2008). What is being done?
