Explain.

  2. Common Used Terms in the media • Terrorist • The War on Terror • Good V Evil • Islamic Terrorist • Islam V Western Democracy • The Clash of civilizations Q1 How helpful are these commonly used terms? Q2 How could the constant use of such language create problems in society?

The use of Folk Devils in the Media Folk devils is the termed use for scapegoatseg people to blame things on so for example you will often read or hear that it is all the immigrants and asylum seekers that are taking our jobs here in the UK rather than a consequence of poor economic policies by government etc. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work in the UK whilst waiting for a decision on asylum and immigrants come in for work according to demand. Teenage Single Mums/ black gangs / Muslims and gypsies are other common folk devils...... Think about the emotive language that is often used in the media....

In pairs analyse the texts for both: • Tabloid or broadsheet? • Which one should be more trustworthy and less biased? • What language is used? • Is it biased?
