  2. Arrived in the New World (Massachusetts Bay Colony) in 1630 at the age of 18 • Raised eight children • Strong Puritan beliefs • Wrote for herself • Her brother-in-law published a collection of her poems

  3. Considered to be the first American poet • Poems express her feelings about the joys and difficulties of everyday Puritan life.

  4. Edward Taylor 1642-1729

  5. Worked as a teacher in England • Emigrated to America in 1668 • Lived in Westfield, Massachusetts

  6. Now regarded as one of the best North American colonial poets • Puritan writer • Only published two stanzas of his poetry during his lifetime

Allusion • an implied or indirect reference to a person, place, or event--real or fictional • Types of allusions include: • Biblical • Mythological • Historical Example: She was breathtakingly beautiful, but he knew that she was forbidden fruit. Forbidden fruit is a Biblical allusion to the Genesis story of Adam and Eve.
