Mount St. Helens Explodes • May 18, 1980 at 8:32 am • 5.1 quake struck under Mt St Helen's • within 10 seconds the giant bulge and surrounding rock fell in an avalanche • opening left allowed release of built-up pressure that erupted laterally with a huge blast of pumice and ash. • avalanche crashed down the mountain (70 - 150 mph) destroying everything in its path • blast of pumice and ash traveled north (300 mph) and was 660 F • Killed everything within an 200 square mile area
