  2. Clinical Setting Fuguitt Elementary School Population: Students from pre-K to grade 5 Preceptor: registered Nurse Kathy Jerkins

  3. Population 600 elementary school students. Pre-K – 5th grade. Population Health Needs: Personal hygiene, type-1 diabetes, obesity, dental caries, poor sun safety, accidents.

  4. Service Learning Project • Goal: Pre- adolescents will maintain good hygiene practices. • Personal Hygiene Powerpoint for 5th graders. • Rationale: • The CDC mentions poor hygiene as a risk factor for MRSA. (CDC 2010). • A study by McDonald and Bailie (2010) in Aboriginal communities shows that infection is related to poor hygiene.

  5. Healthy People 2020 • Healthy People 2020 Objective • Increase the proportion of elementary, middle, and senior high schools that have health education goals or objectives that address the knowledge and skills articulated in the National Health Education Standards (high school, middle, elementary)

  6. Service Learning Project • Risk of poor health among pre-adolescents related to poor hygiene practices. • Goal • Pre- adolescents will maintain good hygiene practices. • Objectives: After the powerpoint, the pre-adolescent will be able to • Identify the age-related body changes. • Recall unpleasant effects that relate to poor health. • Recognize how to avoid unpleasant effects that relate to poor health.

  7. Modifications • Modifications: After showing the presentation to my preceptor, a couple modifications were made. • Added a question to the pre/post test and information to the presentation. • Changed the delivery of the test.

  8. Implementation • Presented powerpoint to fifth grade students. • Presentation involved student participation. • Discussion • pre-test/post-test • Powerpoint was received well. • Answered student questions • Students participated in discussion • Students filled out the pre-test/post-test as asked.

  10. Future Efforts Evaluation of infection rates before and after education. A longer period of time in order to assess effectiveness. Parent involvement.
