  1. The immune systemBy: Deanna Abrams & Jessica Thornton a complex network that protects the body from pathogens and other foreign substances

  2. Standards Students know how the complementary activity of major body systems provide cells with oxygen and nutrients and removes toxic waste products such as carbon dioxide Students know the role of antibodies in the body's response to infection Students know how vaccination protects an individual from infectious diseases Students know why and individual with a compromised immune system may be unable to fight off and survive infections by microorganisms that are usually benign.

  3. Vocab!  Endemic Disease: disease that is constantly present in people living in a particular area Infectious Disease: caused by pathogens that disrupts the homeostasis in the body Pathogen: disease producing agent ex-virus or toxins (a substance produced by bacteria) can sometimes be beneficial Epidemic: rapid increase or spread in the happening of something Antibiotic: substance that can destroy the growth of other microorganisms Koch’s postulates: series of steps are used in order to establish a microorganism as the cause of a disease

  4. Robert Koch General Info: Using his method, anthrax is proven to be caused by pathogens Pathogens cause diseases Discovered rod-shaped bacterium in blood of a cattle

  5. Vaccine and Antibodies Antibodies help the body react to an infection and help it fight off any infection that may occur. When you get a vaccination your body keeps that info of that antigen for later on when you are actually exposed to the disease.

  6. Compromised Immune System A body does not have the ability to fight off disease or has a bad immunity For example, people with AIDS have a weak immune system. Therefore they will not be able to fight and infection as well as people who do not have AIDS.

  7. How can a disease be transmitted? Pathogens ca be transmitted to a host from reservoirs in four main ways: Direct contact By an object Through the air By intermediate organism called a vector (transmitted through DNA)

  8. Diseases can be inherited Examples of inherited diseases: Ahlstrom syndrome Pyle Disease Celiac Disease Hyper viscosity -newborns

  9. Phagocytes: a kind of white blood cell that gets rid of dead cells in the blood. It also reacts against pathogens. B-Lymphocytes: kind of a white blood cell that is the basis for the hormonal immune system T-Lymphocytes: kind of blood cell that is the basis for cell-mediated immunity Blood Cells
