  2. Extinction • The result of animals or plants being unable to adapt to changing conditions. • is the process in which groups of organisms (species) die out.

  3. Mass Extinctions • rapid events during which a significant part of all life on Earth becomes extinct • the life forms that become extinct must have belong to different phyla, live in different habitats, spread out over the world.

  4. Causes of Mass Extinctions • Catastrophic Agents-meteorite impacts and comet showers, • Earth Agents- volcanism, glaciation, variations in sea level, global climatic changes, and changes in ocean levels of oxygen or salinity

  5. Major Extinctions • Ordovician–Silurian event 440–450 Mya • Late Devonian – 360–375 Mya • Permian–Triassic event– 251 Mya • Triassic–Jurassic event – 205 Mya • Cretaceous–Tertiary event 65. Mya • Holocene- Today!!!!!
