  1. The Great Gatsby Chapter 6

  2. Self Invention • Nick now gives the story of Gatsby’s life before. • Formerly called James Gatz • He lived close to nature • As Nick does so he continues to mythologise Gatsby describing him as • “a son of God” (page 105) • Nick stresses that he is telling the truth about Gatsby, not rumours or gossip

  3. Tom Buchanan • He criticises Gatsby’s lack of social graces • Page 110: My God, I believe the man’s coming. • He disapproves of the fact his wife visits Gatsby alone: • …women run around too much these days to suit me. They meet all kinds of crazy fish. • Their meeting suggests that it is inevitable that their paths will cross

  4. The Buchanans at the party • “His presence gave the evening its quality of oppressiveness” • Nick is aware that this party on many ways seems like a normal one. • Which technique does he use to suggest this in the middle of page 111? • Gatsby seems to go to a lot of effort to introduce them to people, in contrast to his behaviour at other parties.

  5. A change in mood • The turning point of the previous chapter • And Tom’s presence changes the mood: • Page 113: • “I’d enjoyed these same people only two weeks before” • But what had amused me then turned septic on the air now. • The people seem drunk and uncaring towards each other.

  6. Daisy • She seems to like the romance and glamour of the film actress (page 114) • “the rest offended her” • Nick says that “she failed to understand” • But feels he can explain for her that she dislikes the • “Euphemisms” • And people “going from nothing to nothing” • The deceitfulness and meaninglessness

  7. Shadows • What does the sentence “Sometimes a shadow…invisible glass” suggest?

  8. A menagerie • What does this word choice suggest about Tom’s attitude?

  9. Daisy’s Voice • Nick again describes the beauty of her voice on page 115: • “Bringing out a meaning in each word that it had never had before and would never have again” • “Tipped out a little of her warm human magic”

  10. Daisy • Gatsby, and his parties, provide Daisy with the thrill of romance lacking in her life • Page 116 • What type of sentence does Fitzgerald use to suggest the uncertain possiblities?

  11. Gatsby • In talking to Nick Gatsby betrays his insecurity • Yet he hates the idea his efforts might be in vain, page 117 • The reason for his insecurity seems to be “lurking in the shadow”

  12. Pages 117-118
