  2. Self-Esteem • Definition- Refers to how much you respect yourself and like yourself. • Range- High to Low • High Self-Esteem= Positive effect on health • Low Self-Esteem = Negative effect on health

High Self-Esteem • What are the benefits of having high self esteem? • Maintain a positive attitude even when they fail at a task. • If you feel good about yourself it will lead to healthier behavior. • More likely to set goals. • What are two short term goals that you have? • What are two long term goals that you have?

Low Self-Esteem • What are the risks of having low self-esteem? • Worry about what others think of them • Fear of failure/Don’t want to try new things • Think success is luck • Students are more likely to use drugs, drop out of school, become pregnant, suffer from eating disorders, and be violent

  5. Self-Esteem Scale • Look at the chart on page 38. • Why is self-esteem the lowest during the adolescence years and at the end of adulthood? • How can the media affect teens and their self-esteem? • Why is self-esteem the highest during adulthood?

  6. Improving Your Self-Esteem • Read bold statement on page 39. • List of strengths and weaknesses • Set realistic goals • Don’t be hard on yourself • Rely on your values • Accept Compliments • Don’t focus too much on appearance
