Lenin • Lenin establishes a dictatorship of the party not a dictatorship of the proletariat (Marx pushed for) • Lenin suffers a stroke in 1922, he survives but competition begins to replace him • Leon Trotsky & Joseph Stalin are the leading men • Lenin dies in 1924, before his death he did not trust Stalin and his use of power • Lenin body is kept in Red Square in Russia

  4. Stalin Becomes Dictator • Stalin outmaneuvered Trotsky & had total control of the party • Trotsky was exiled from Russia in 1929 • Stalin now Dictator of the country

Totalitarianism • Totalitarianism- govt. takes total control over every aspect of human life • To accomplish this control dictators use: • Terror (violence to force obedience) • Indoctrination (instruction of govt. beliefs) • Propaganda (biased or incomplete information) • Censorship (control of the media) • Religious or Ethnic Persecution (state must estb. a scapegoat for all of its problems)

Stalin Builds a Tolalitarian State • Builds a secret police • Monitored phone lines, read mail & planted informers • Used Russian propaganda • Controlled all newspapers, media, motion pictures & etc… • Government controlled all education • Children learned virtues of the Communist Party • Religious Persecution • Russian Orthodox main target
