  2. Lord of the Flies – Chapter 7 We are learning to: Success Criteria Identify and discuss the use of symbolism in Chapter 7. • I can explain the ideas portrayed through the use of an object / person. • Jotter? • Planner on the desk? • Pen or pencil? Achieving this S.C. means you are on target!

  3. Chapter Summary • Ralph is dismayed by the state of the boys. • Jack discovers the tracks of a wild boar. • The boys devise a ritual dance to celebrate the hunt. • Ralph, Jack and Roger climb to the top of the island and discover the dead parachutist. • Terrified by their discovery, they flee down the mountain.

  4. Shadows and Tall Trees • The chapter Shadows and Tall Trees relates to the text, in a word, as the summary. • The shadows are the hidden mysteries on the island, the unknowns that lurk in the dark depths of the shadows; it does not just relate to the time it takes place in. • Also, tall trees show the overgrown quality of the forest; its age and character, as well as its uninhabited aura. • It gives the feeling of things hidden behind those tall trees.

  6. Symbolism • Waves: • the heartlessness and impassivity of the island, and more specifically the area they were travelling. • It is real, it is harsh, and if you fail, it could cost you your life. • Also, a barrier, from salvation.

  7. Mountain: • daunting precipice where anything can happen; an unknown fear that could be life or death; holds an unseen beast.

  8. Pig: • not just a means for food, but also a channel in which it is seen as justified for savagery to be present. You must stop at no barrier; the pig is an animal, to trap it you must think like it, move like it, be like it, and therefore become an animal yourself.

  9. Beast: • the unknown fear everybody has. • Every nightmare manifested from living on an island of possible terrors. • Conformation of a beastly being that could cause death, and drag them off into the night.

  10. Jack: • willingness for savagery. • Example: using the little'uns for the game of slayer and pig. • Also, antagonist and challenger of order.

  11. Simon: • Hope, to infer into his statement that Ralph will return from whence he came. • Also, keeping balance and aiding those in need by stopping the dispute and offering to go and tell Piggy and the litt'uns about the extended journey.

  12. Chapter 7 of the Lord of the Flies portrays many things; loss in morality, one of the first slips into savagery, and the sense that there end is soon approaching. • The readers feels as if death is imminent, whether by a so called "beast" discovered, or by their own hands. many things relate to this chapter, just as this chapter relates to many things.
