7. “Good” vs “bad” Muslims By definition, a Muslim is a person who follows the doctrine of Islam. A “good” Muslim is one who follows the Koran and Sunna and is Sharia-compliant; those who don’t become kafir. 12. What is Sharia? Sharia is believed by Islamists to be Allah’s Sacred Islamic law for all mankind. 19. Introduction to Slavery (a) The Koran prescribes a humanitarian approach to slavery -- free men could not be enslaved. Kafirs faithful to foreign religions could live as “protected” persons, dhimmis, under Muslim rule as long as they payed Jizya, a heavy tax. However, as the Islamic Empire spread, much harsher interpretation of the law occurred. If a dhimmi was unable to pay his/her taxes they could be enslaved.
