  2. A History Lesson…Why is talking and listening so important?

  3. Mary Ellen Wilson 1874 • In 1874, a young girl known only as "Mary Ellen", was found tied to a bed like an animal, neglected and brutally beaten by her foster parents. In 1874, animals were legally protected from inhumane treatment, children weren't.

  5. NSPCC 2000 • Interviewed 3000 in UK • 1 in 14 suffered physical violence at hands of parent or carers • 49% ill treated by mother • 40% ill treated by father • 8% ill treated by step parent • 1 in 17 suffered serious physical neglect • 1 in 25 girls sexually abused by family member

  6. Domestic Violence • In 90% of cases children are in the same or an adjacent room • Child/woman abuse occur together in up to 60% of cases • Children feel guilty that they have not offered support to the victim • This results in anxiety….leading to ‘observable behavioural effects’

  7. Emergence of ECM- WHY? • As a result of Climbie who died in 2000. • Support Services were involved 12 times over 10 months • Common Threads: • Late intervention • Poor information sharing • No accountability • Over stretched front line workers

  8. Multi Agency involvement • All agencies have a responsibility for safeguarding • LAs have to promote achievement of children in care • Clear standards must be set

  9. Early Intervention • Development of CAF (Common Assessment Framework) • A single lead professional • Multi-disciplinary teams in children’s centres to support schools

  14. How to get children to express their views?...Play 1. What are the types and range of play activities that children might engage in within your context? 2. Did the games you played as a child reflect your own experiences? 3. Is play meaningful? 4. Where do play ideas come from? 5. What play activities might be cause for concern? 6. Can spontaneous play provide indicators of the child’s emotional condition? -Can normal play include murder, suicide, sadism? 7. What might some causes for concern be?
