Workshop Summary and Recommendations: Summary • Transmission-related R&D support needed • To improve reliability • To relieve congestion • To increase through-put over existing facilities • To facilitate infrastructure siting • Transmission technology needs (or in need of improvement) • Robust monitoring • Interoperability • Security • High capacity conductance • Storage

Workshop Summary and Recommendations: Summary(cont.) • Distribution-related R&D support needed • To accommodate distributed generation resources • To encourage development of micro-grids • To support demand respondent end uses • Distribution technology needs (or in need of improvement) • “Smart” grids (2-way communications) • Real grid operation simulation • Affordable, reliable reactive power • Storage

Workshop Summary and Recommendations: Summary(cont.) • General areas of consensus: • The critical transmission issue is to mitigate chance of the cascading, catastrophic outage • Most historic cascading outages could have been prevented by more prompt intervention and response • Transmission systems are becoming increasingly more complicated because of public policy and market forces • Transmission systems could benefit from more use of digital technologies

Workshop Summary and Recommendations: Recommendations • Priority funding for technologies that improve the man/data interface • e.g. state estimation; communications; alarming; visualization • Stratify R&D opportunities to better delineate opportunities that should be funded by DOE vs. industry or a specific entity • e.g. is applicability utility specific or RTO-wide; is technology nascent or nearly commercial; does it address reliability, congestion or increasing thru-put

  6. Workshop Summary and Recommendations: R&D Needs Not Presented • Identify current barriers to technology adaptation by utility industry • e.g. Risk/reward, performance uncertainty, etc. • Support projects to demonstrate distribution system “hardening” to increase storm resistance • e.g. effective vegetation mgt., pole spacing, stronger conductor • Support broadband over powerline projects • To “accommodate” smart grids and demand response
