  7. The Impact on Patient Care • Patient data available where it is needed • Hospital information more available (wish it was for me!) • Maybe hospital staff will start using their computers?

  8. What do patients want? • Rapid access to health care services • Kindness, caring and consideration • Being given the time I need / want • To be listened to • To have my problems dealt with well • Not to be killed unnecessarily!

  9. What do the Worried Well want • To be seen when they want to be seen • Not to have to wait in waiting room • Have anxieties dealt with • Confidentiality, need to know • To have health promotion • NHS Direct, Walk in Centres, Electronic Booking

  10. What do sick people want? • To be seen when they need to be seen • Adequate and rapid pain relief • Continuity of care • Seeing someone they know and trust who is expecting them • Seeing someone who knows their history – has notes

  12. How will you help me as a Patient? • Most of this conference is about quality data • Quality data for collection / analysis is a secondary aim • Quality data is all about improving direct patient care • I want the data available to my carers to be accurate and useful

  13. Quality Clinical Data • Quality data to ensure I am followed up appropriately • Quality Data to ensure the computer produces alerts, reminders and watchdogs which help the clinician • Quality data to facilitate adequate disease information is available to my carers

  14. Responsibility • Thus those of you concerned with quality data have a responsibility • Coping with such a social responsibility requires professionalism

  15. Health Informatics Professionalism • Professionalism is all about: • Doing a job well • Being aware of the impact of what you do • Having standards of qualification, experience and behaviour • You are not alone
