  5. Safety in the lab If you are working in a lab at the University of Bremen you have to follow the “General Laboratory Policies” (Laborrahmenordnung).

  6. Important points of the “General Laboratory Policies”: • Eating, drinking and smoking is forbidden in the lab. • Keep the labs clean and orderly. • Be familiar with the safety equipment and its usage. • Protective clothing has to be worn (if required). • Turn offdefective devices immediately. • During general blackout, only use exhaust hoods connected to the emergency power grid. • If no longer needed, turn of all gas, water and air lines. • Use the emergency switch in case of a accident due to fire or electricity.

  7. Working in the lab: • Ensure that the ventilation in the lab is switched on and the windows are closed. • Escape routes to exits, windows, eye wash etc. have to be wide enough (min. 0.8 m) to handle emergency situations. • When leaving the lab, close the windows and lock the door for safety reasons and to prevent theft. • When you are working alone at late evening or at the weekend: • Inform your team leader before working alone. • Agree with your team leader, how to ensure that you are fine, e.g. a call by a colleague at a specified time.

  8. Examples of safety equipment at the IUP

  9. Laser If the laser warning light is switched on, do not enter the lab without permission. The laser safety representatives at AG Burrows are: - K. Gerilowski - M. Horstjann

  10. In case of situations which are abnormal or if you see any damage in the lab, please informimmediately: • the person in charge for the lab / device • the person in charge for security (safety instructors for AG Burrows: K. Gerilowski / W. Thomssen) • one of the building technicians (GBT, Tel. 60669) • the supervisors of the IUP (J. Burrows, J. Notholt)‏

  11. 2. Handling of dangerous goods • The dangerous goods representative (Gefahrstoff-beauftragte) for the IUP AG Burrows is: • M. D. Andrés Hernández (Room U3135) • Save handling: • Store chemicals in the designated cabinets. • Store acids and bases in separate cabinets. • Do not store chemicals in your office. • Use personal protective equipment (glasses, gloves etc.)

Introducing, ordering and checking of new chemicals: • Is it compatible with chemicals already used? • What about the safe storage? • What about the disposal of contaminated waste? • Is the current issue of the material safety data sheet available? • Is the person working with it familiar with the safety instructions? • Inform the safety instructor and the dangerous goods representative. Send them the Material Safety Datasheet.

  13. The Material Safety Datasheet (MSDS / EG-Sicherheits-datenblatt) for chemicals … ...has to be at every working place using dangerous goods (visible for everyone)‏ … hasto be at the storage area ... describes the chemical and its handling ... describes the actions in case of an accident ... has to be immediately available … are made available by the person who is in charge of the equipment

  14. Only do the following actions with assistance by a second person: • Changing bottles with dangerous gas and works on the gas systems. • All duties which include handling of dangerous goods. • Works which are classified as very dangerous as working on High Voltage or with 380 V.

  15. 3. Behavior in case of emergency or accident • The next pages show: • - The list of first aiders in FB 01 • - The alarm plan / phones for emergency calls • - The behavior in case of an accident • -The personal data sheet

  16. First Aider • Ersthelfer • List available: • at IUP webpage • at emergency phones at lab level • inside labs

  17. First Aid Box – Verbandskasten Register your injury in the first aid logbook (Verbandbuch) to prove an accident at work. First Aid Room is N0061.
