Background • SNMP has been (and still is) the IETF Standard for Internet Network Management • COPS was originally Developed for outsourcing Policy Decisions (Proposed Standard) • COPS-PR is an extension for Provisioning Policy Information (Proposed Standard) • So now we seem to have 2 technical solutions to address the same problem space IM 2001, Seattle

  3. Current Work in IETF • RAP WG • COPS • SPPI and base PIBs • SNMPCONF • MIBs for Policy Based Management • BCP for Configuration Management • EOS • Enhancements to SNMP • SMIng • Enhancements to SMI • Converge SMI and SPPI IM 2001, Seattle

Discussion Today • Why do we need another Protocol? • What does each Protocol Provide? • If so, would it (eventually replace SNMP) or would the two be complementary to each other • Let us at least converge at the level of the Data Definition Language • What do YOU all think and what kind of questions does this raise in your minds IM 2001, Seattle
