As the school bus parked the children watched a large outdoor Calder sculpture slowly turn in the breeze. Inside the museum, century-old paintings hung on the gallery walls. One painting showed a silver teapot and pastries glimmering on a very heavy silver tray. One woman in the painting looked thoughtful, and the other woman sipped tea. Other paintings showed mounts, boats, and flowers. Time went by fast, and soon it was time to leave. Think about it: What’s this excerpt MOSTLY about? What’s the main idea of this selection? Students should stay away from pastries. A group of students go on a field trip to the museum. Visiting a museum can be very interesting.

He graduated school at the age of fourteen and began his life as a young seaman. Columbus sailed the seas for more than forty years and was proud of his accomplishments. He wrote in his journal, “Wherever anyone has sailed, there I have sailed.” Think about it: What’s this excerpt MOSTLY about? What’s the main idea of this selection? Christopher Columbus was a remarkable sailor. Christopher Columbus had a lot of education. Christopher Columbus was destined to be a great man.

  9. Let’s Try One Together… As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish flinging them into the sea. Finally, catching up with the youth, he asked why he was doing this. The young man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles, and there are millions of starfish,” commented the old man. “How can your effort make any difference?” The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it safely in the waves. “It makes a difference to this one,” he said. What does this excerpt teach us about life? What is the theme of this passage? The morning sun will kill stranded starfish? Starfish must be saved from extinction.
