  3. Globalization & Health • Increased global trade & travel promotes rapid spread • Improved access to medicines, medical information, and training that can help treat or cure these diseases

  4. T-P-S • What are the current major world diseases in need of attention? • HIV/AIDS • Tuberculosis (TB) • Found around world, dvpt and dvping nations • Malaria • Cholera/Diarrheal Diseases • Primarily afflict poorer countries

  5. Major Health Concerns: • HIV/AIDS:Infects human tissues, causing progressive decline in immune system that leads to death • 2.6 m new cases/yr, 1.8m deaths, over 33m living with disease • Since 1980s, 60m+ infected, 30m+ died • Debate over allocation of resources to prevention or treatment • Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection that attacks lungs & other organs • 8 m new cases per year, 1.7 m die/yr (500K co-infected w/AIDS) • Spread through infectious droplets (cough, sneeze, spit) • Thrives in conditions of poverty & overcrowding • DOTS prevention & treatment system

Major Health Concerns: • Malaria: Parasite infects blood (mosquito bite) causing extreme flu-like symptoms • 400 m new cases/yr, kills ~2m (mainly children in Sub-Saharan Africa) - Asia, Africa, Central/South America • Infant death, drop in education, decline in productivity& dvpt • Antimalarial drugs, treated bed-nets & other protective measures • Cholera: Bacteria infects intestine causing diarrheal illness • 3-5 m cases/yr, ~1.9m deaths • Areas w/inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene • Rehydration & antibiotics, protective sanitary measures
