  1. Nursing ManagemenT: Motivation

  2. Motivational theorist in Management Motivation describes the factors that initiate and direct behavior. Motivated employees are more likely to be productive than nonmotivated workers. This is one reason that motivation is an important aspect of enhancing employee performance.

  3. Historically motivational theories were concerned with three things: • What mobilizes or energizes human behavior • What directs behavior toward the accomplishment of some objective • How such behavior is sustained over time

  4. It is used depends on their ability to • explain motivation adequately • Predict with some degree of accuracy what people actually do and lastly • Suggest practical ways of influencing employees to accomplish organizational objectives

  5. MT can be classified into at least 2 distinct group: • Content Theorists • Process Theorists

  6. Content theories: Motivational theories that emphasize individual needs or the rewards that may satisfy those needs

  7. Comparison of Content theories

  8. Process theories Motivational theories that emphasize how the motivation process works to direct an individual’s effort into performance

  9. 1. Process theories Attempt to explain why a person behaves in a particular manner MT that emphasize how the motivation process works to direct an individual’s effort into performance

The nurse manager is responsible for • Understanding motivating factors for employees and how motivation affects job performance • Using motivational techniques to enhance employee performance • Utilizing creative techniques to motivate staff when traditional rewards such as pay or benefit increases are unavailable and

  13. Empowering staff to use creativity to enhance job performance.
