Prefix Vocabulary – Myth Stories • presumption – (noun) a belief or assumption based on reasonable evidence. • “Punished shall you be for your presumption, but the gods will not let die such skill as you have shown. • distress – (noun) great pain, anxiety, or sorrow • At the sight of the tears and distress of his son, Apollo at once granted his request. • reproaches – (verb) to find fault with aperson, or group; to blame • To all the reproaches of Narcissus, she could merely reply by repeating to him what he had just said. • repelled – (verb) to force or drive back • Narcissus, however, not merely repelled Echo-he also repelled all the other nymphs. • exceeding – (verb) to be superior to something, especially in size or quality • He provided him with a sickle of exceeding sharpness to use in cutting off Medusa’s head, and Perseus was equipped for his battle. • implored – (verb)toseriously beg or ask someoneto do something • The king in vain implored him to change his mind. • deprived – (verb) to prevent someone from possessing or enjoying something • She managed before his birth to arrange matters so that he was deprived of the rulership of a kingdom. • endure – (verb) to experience pain and hardship without giving up • You shall endure no toils. • unhesitatingly – (adv) not delayed by uncertainty • Unhesitatingly, in his vision, Hercules chose the path of duty. • rejoiced – (verb) to feel or express great joy or happiness • He rejoiced in his freedom and was quite content to let Hercules take his place forever.
