  1. Teaching with digital technologies Approaches Good Practice Resources

  2. Distance learning? • Online learning? • E-learning? • Blended learning? What exactly is digital teaching?

  3. Blended learning is a hybrid of learning and teaching methods

  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQHX-SjgQvQ&feature=youtu.be How some of us feel about new technologies

  5. Why use a VLE? • How do we learn to use it? • Are there disadvantages to using a VLE? Virtual Learning Environment (VLEs or LMSs)

  6. Static  interactive

  7. Additional software for creating formative and summative quizzes • Podcasting equipment and software • Plagiarism detection software/systems • Handheld voting systems • Synchronous conferencing /videoconferencing systems • Blogs and or wikis Using more than just moodle

  8. Encourage your students to actually engage with the content you are uploading or even engage in the creation of the content themselves. Designing online activities in English Studies

  9. Example: ‘Fin de Siècle Online Experience’ • What would you do? Developing good practice

  10. Designing online tasks is analogous to designing small group work • Do include prompting questions and specific tasks • Encourage research and discussion of research (not just grabbing data) Effective design

  11. Make sure instructions are available to students on how to access and participate in the forums or individual activities. • Make discussion a stated aim for activities and reinforce this through repetition (we often specify minimum numbers of postings and replies per activity). • See as students see: make sure instructions and questions are clear, unambiguous, and jargon-free. • Be creative – take advantage of the multimedia possibilities of online discussion by embedding images and illustrations, audio- or video-clips, in the environments you are working with. Good practice

  12. Effective use of virtual learning environments – this very useful info kit from the JISC provides a great deal of information about getting started with VLEs • The English Subject Centre’s E-learning Case Studies– these case studies provide a window into innovative teaching practice in English departments across the UK • The English Subject Centre’s E-Learning projects – There are many project reports on the English Subject Centre website that mention the benefits of VLEs Other resources
