  3. 1. Library Website Getting to the Library The Library is listed under the SHSU Fast Links menu, which is accessible from almost any SHSU web page http://library.shsu.edu Or, scroll down on the SHSU homepage There is also a direct link to the Library on the right

  4. 1. Library Website Welcome to the Library Website! Take a look at the Library Hours When the library is open, a librarian is available to assist you through the Ask A Librarian service

  5. 1. Library Website Ask-A-Librarian This service offers quick ways to get answers for a research question For instance, you can Instant Message (Chat) with us anytime the library is open, including most weeknights until 1am & on weekends Lets get back to the Library Homepage….

Library Website The Library Collections Resources in the library can be roughly divided into 2 groups • Books (include electronic books) & all material physically in the library can be searched using Books & More • Journal articles & other electronic information can be searched using Articles & More

  7. 1. Library Website Accessing Library Resources All the resources you will see in this tutorial can be accessed from any location. However, when accessing library resources off-campus, you may be asked to login – this is just our way of verifying you’re an SHSU student = Email & SHSUOnline Login = Blackboard Login

  9. 2. Search for Articles 2. Articles & More (Databases) You will need articles for your assignment, which are stored in Databases Let’s look at Databases for the subject of Business

  10. 2. Search for Articles Business Databases For this tutorial, we will focus on Business Journal Article Databases But remember, there are business databases available for many different types of information

Search for Articles Generating Search Words Let’s search for articles about “the development of code of ethics” There are a few ways to come up with search words, we can use: OR to include similar concepts & get more results AND to combine concepts & focus a search NOT to exclude a concept (e.g. ethics NOT Enron) code of ethics OR ethics code Code of ethics AND development Now it’s time to put these tools to use…

  12. 2. Search for Articles Business Article Databases We will look at the database Business Source Complete today However, most article databases offer similar search functions, so what you learned here will also be useful for future assignments

  13. 2. Search for Articles Business Source Complete (BSC) This search combines two concepts, code of ethics AND development Note we are including both the words develop AND development to include different words that covers this concept

Search for Articles BSC – Narrowing Results There are a few ways to focus your search results even more We can narrow your search results further by clicking on one of the suggested subject or concept words For instance, narrow the search to “leadership” or “corporate culture” in the contexts of developing code of ethics

Search for Articles BSC – Results by Publication Type There are a few ways to focus your search results even more We can also narrow results to a particular type of publication: Academic Journals are written by and for scholars and experts in a given field of study, and provide in-depth analysis of an issue Trade Publication & Magazines are usually written by the journalist for the general public, and contains concise, practical info, but with less in-depth analysis You are likely expected to use articles from Academic Journals, sometimes with few articles from other types of publications

Search for Articles BSC – Selecting Articles All the Added articles will be kept in a Folder until you are ready to decide which ones to keep This folder will save your selected articles until you close the web browser or timeout due to inactivity See an article you like? Click on the Add option on the right of the article

  17. 2. Search for Articles BSC - More ways to Choose Clicking on the title of an article will bring you its full record, which includes all the major Subject Terms covered by this article, and its Abstract, or summary

Search for Articles BSC – Article Folder Once you have selected a good group of articles, click on to view them Many Articles will have a Full Text link, just click on the link to open/read/print the whole article For articles that does not have a Full Text link, click on the “Check LinkSource” option

  19. 2. Search for Articles Checking for Full Text will search for the Full Text of your selected article in all the Library Databases In this case, the Full Text of our article is available in 2 other databases Click to get to Full Text

  20. 2. Search for Articles Citation via Print/Email Lastly, we can email a copy of the articles to ourselves in APA citation format

  21. Author Name(s) (Date) Article name. 3. APA Sample APA Citation Journal Name, doi: Cheek, F., & Bradigan, P. (2010). Academic health sciences library research support. Journal of the Medical Library Association, 98(2), 167-171. doi:10.3163/1536-5050.98.2.011. Volume(Issue), page#. What’s DOI? Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique code assigned to every article published electronically. It presents a persistent link to the article’s location on the internet. DOI is fairly new & some articles may not have one yet. However, if your article has a DOI, please include it in the citation.

  22. 3. APA Guides on How to Cite APA citation guide on the library website offers examples on how to cite different types of resources.

  23. 3. APA More Citation Help When faced with an especially “interesting” item to cite, please take a look at the additional APA Resources (we love Purdue’s guide) And please feel free to use the Ask A Librarian service for assistance
