  2. True or False? By helping my child to learn a few simple reading strategies I can help them to become a more confident reader.

  3. . TRUE: Putting a few simple strategies into action will make a real difference in helping children develop into good readers and writers. Through reading aloud, providing print materials, and promoting positive attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children's literacy and learning.

Our New Reading Scheme • Our new scheme works comletely differently to the old one. • The levels are not just reading scheme levels but also national curriculum levels. • When your child brought home their report last year it included their national curiculum level. • We used that to help us place them onto the right level in our scheme.

  5. Our New Reading Scheme • They may move up or down the levels depending on their progress. • There are a mixture of fiction and non fiction books within the scheme because it is important that children are exposed to a range of text styles.

  6. Phonics and Word Recognition The ability to recognise words presented in and out of context. The ability to blend letter sounds (phonemes) together to read words. Understanding The ability to understand the meaning of the words and sentences in a text. The ability to understand the ideas, information and themes in a text. If a child understands what they hear, they will understand the same information when they read. Reading requires two skills

  12. Tips For Reading With Your Child • Have your child read aloud to you every night. • Choose a quiet place, free from distractions, to read with your child.

  13. Tips For Reading With Your Child • To check your child’s understanding of what she is reading, occasionally pause and ask your child questions about the characters and events in the story. • Before getting to the end of a story, ask your child what she thinks will happen next and why.

  14. Tips For Reading With Your Child • When your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, point out the words he has missed and help him to read the word correctly. • Ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in a story.

Tips For Reading With Your Child • Ask your child why she thinks a character acted in a certain way, and ask your child to support her answer with information from the story. • After your child has stopped to correct a word he has read, have him go back and reread the entire sentence from the beginning to make sure he understands what the sentence is saying.

  16. Some ideas for talking about a book with your child. Do you like this book; why? Who is your favourite character? Tell me about a character in the book. Which words tell you what the character is like? How would you feel? What do you think will happen next? What would you do? What have you learned about …… in your book? What can you tell me about…?
