Facts about the Foundation • Established in 1997 • Originators: • the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry of Finland • the City of Joensuu • Mission: • supporting the development of the headquarters of the EFI; and • promoting the forestry and environmental research having a European dimension and conducted in Joensuu. • Main functions: • managing the real property, i.e. the Headquarters of EFI, in Torikatu 34, Joensuu, Finland; • awarding research grants; and • raising funds for new grants

Two PhD research grants awarded in 2010 • Net funding for 3 years: 19,000 €/yr + additional travelling grant of 1,000 €/yr • Metsähallitus Grant • to Mr. Rubén Valbuena Puebla (Spain) • topic: Obtaining Pan-European indicators of forest structural diversity by means of airborne laser scanning • Ponsse Grant • to Mr. HouZhengyang (China) • topic: Applying airborne laser scanning data for harvesting planning in the context of precision forestry

  5. New research financing tool • A fixed-term post (3 yrs) for the research aiming at a PhD thesis • Work to be conducted at the Headquarters of EFI • Open call to be launched in the beginning of 2011 on the topic: Changing forest product markets and trade in the face of regional and global changes • validating the consistency of trade data for market analysis; and • analysing the impact of external factors (economic growth, energy prices, etc) and European policies (e.g., climate, renewable energy, and EU FLEGT) on the markets and trade.
