  3. Procedures for the Volunteer Program • Procedures for the volunteer program during the 2013-2014 SY are as follows: • 1. Always sign-in at the front office upon arrival at the school. • 2. Attend your volunteer orientation session. It will answer many questions for you. • 3. Ensure that your application is completed on line. (KISD HOME Page- bottom left side of the screen. Scroll down to Volunteer Application) • NOTE- THIS IS NOW AN ELECTRONIC PROCESS 4. You may check with your campus Volunteer Coordinator to see if your application is approved. (Allow 24 – 72 hours) 5. Inform your coordinator if you have special talents or a desire for a specific type of assignment. 6. Let your coordinator know if you are not able to come to the campus, but are willing to work on projects at home. 7. Notify your coordinator or campus if there is a conflict or issue of concern. 8. Remember the importance of logging in/out of your volunteer hours system. 9. Please dress comfortably, but appropriately. If in doubt- ASK. 10. ALWAYS wear your badges or name-tags so that you are easily recognized while working on campus.

Your Role: The volunteer will …. • Follow the directions of the teacher………. • To reinforce and enrich the educational process. • Ask questions when there is a need for clarification. • Serve as members of the team & commit to a specific amount of time as agreed (daily, weekly, etc.) • Honor the confidentiality policy. • Attend available training opportunities. • Be prompt and dependable.

  5. What will I do? • Work with students in small groups • Prepare materials for use by students & the teacher • Listen to a student read or read to a student • Work on special projects (at home or school) • Work on / complete assigned tasks • Serve as a special friend /mentor at school

  6. MATCHING YOUR SKILLS WITH THE ORGANIZATION’S NEEDS • Are there things I can do at home? • How do I want to spend my time? • How much time do I have to give consistently? • What if it doesn’t work out?

  7. Sharing your creative side is welcomed! • Presenting or assisting with special projects such as • Music • Art • Drama • Cultural projects CREATIVE

  8. The Resource Volunteer: One who has special talents, skills, or a hobby to share, usually creative. • Are you a “RESOURCE VOLUNTEER?” • Do you possess a highly defined area of expertise? • Would you like to share your knowledge to enhance student growth and development? • Do you enjoy hobbies such as coin /stamp collecting, building model airplanes, travel, doll making, or possess an in-depth knowledge of the U.S. or other countries? • If you answered “yes” to any of these then you would fit the category or a Resource Volunteer”.

Program Organization: • The principal is in charge and designates a coordinator for the campus. • Coordinators guide program implementation. • Volunteers WILL be provided a handbook of guidelines and procedures. • Volunteers are screened very carefully to protect students & staff. • Volunteers will follow the identified procedures for their campus & district.

  10. “Tickets to Success” Because we appreciate you and your service so much, we want to do everything possible to support your success as a volunteer. we have provided in the next few slides, what we consider to be “tickets to success” for the most rewarding experience possible. thank you in advance for your commitment & service!

  11. Measure up to the expectations set for you the volunteer.It’s your ticket to success……. • BE RELIABLE: • Be on time. • Notify school staff in case of absences. • Secure a replacement if possible. • Come prepared to work. • Do not bring other children when you volunteer.

TICKET TO SUCCESS: Remember that Volunteers are VALUED and are expected to: UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFIDENTIALITY: Refuse to discuss staff, students, or school affairs with anyone except the appropriate staff member in a professional, problem-solving atmosphere. What is seen and heard in your area of service… stays within the area of service! CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION

TICKET TO SUCCESS:YOU are VALUED and are expected to: • BE A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL FOR STUDENTS: • Set a good example with regard to appearance and behavior. • Respect all students and their parents regardless of socio-economic status, race, cultural background, heritage or religion, etc. • Follow policies and practices. • Show students that you care with • *a smile • *a thumbs up • *specific genuine praise

  14. Now, Let’s review our handbook. Your Guiding Light… When in doubt and you can’t immediately contact the coordinator… Review your volunteer handbook!
