  1. “The MSTRI Solved” A MSTRI Technical Program Introduction Ray Lemieux, MSTRI Director 2008 Alberta Nanotech Showcase Thursday November 20, 2008 Blue Session – 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

  2. Mandate • An economic development initiative mandated to capture early stage commercial opportunities generated by regional strengths in microsystems and nanotechnology. • Works with Alberta researchers in industry and academia to foster the development of innovative “small” prototype concepts where the anticipated outcomes offer a potential for crystallizing commercial opportunities. • MSTRI is a critical component within the Alberta NanoStrategy.

  3. History • Founded in 2000 through the vision and collaboration between provincial/federal governments, industry and the University of Alberta. • Phase I - $1.17M from AB, AE&T and WD under the Western Economic Partnership Agreement (WEPA). • Phase II – $3.0M Renewed funding from the Province of Alberta through AB, AE&T and the Innovation Program – Unleashing Innovation Stream with matching funding from WD through WEPA. • Phase III - $8.175M from the Province of Alberta through NanoAlberta.

  4. Funding

  5. Management Principal – Dr. David Lynch, Dean-Engineering (UA) Advisory Board Chair - Dr. Steven Dew, Associate Dean Engineering (UA) Advisory Board - Representatives from sponsoring organizations, academia (UA/UC), national research institutions (NINT/NRC-IRAP) and Alberta’s microsystem industry. Director - Ray Lemieux, P.Eng.

  6. Objectives • Identify and support MNT prototyping in support of early stage technology commercialization. • Assist the development of new high tech business leaders who are passionate at spawning a new technology-driven businesses. • Elevate the awareness of MNT technical and commercialization opportunities within Alberta. • Ensure activities and outcomes contribute to the future success of the Alberta NanoStrategy. • Encourage the use of Alberta’s MNT infrastructure investments.

  7. Programs Technical – Provides early-stage prototype development funding for: concept validation; pre-product development verification; and MNT packaging. Entrepreneurship – Encourages advanced technical degree graduates to pursue an entrepreneurial approach for pursuing the commercialization of their MNT-based product concept. Ecosystem Development – Conducts activities to enhance interaction and collaboration within the MNT community and existing businesses to generate a winning business attitude within Alberta’s developing MNT industrial sector.

  8. Expenditures

  9. Technical Program Project Requirements Participants: Academic/institutional researchers (1), university spin-off companies (2), university/industry collaborations (3) or industry (4). Work Scope: To involve some degree of MNT design and/orfabrication. Intellectual Property: Create new or strengthen (technically) existing intellectual property. Commercial Horizon: High probability of remaining in Canada.
