  2. What is Sato-umi • “Sato” means village, and “umi” means seas. • Sato-umi is a Japanese term for a mosaic of different ecosystem types along with human settlements, which has been managed to produce bundles of ecosystem services for human well-being.

  3. fishing villages, fisheries operations, aquaculture, sea bathing, shellfish gathering, sport fishing (angling), nature observation, urban area, etc.etc.

  4. Purposes of Sato-umi • Aiming at well-balanced mix of various ecosystem services, and sustainable management of coastal seas not only in water quality but also in ecosystem and ecosystem services.

  5. Sato-umi related international events/symposiums • PEMSEA (Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia) meeting in Korea, 2005 • EMECS 7 (7th Conference of Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas) in France, 2006 • East Asian Seas Congress in Philippines, 2009 • CBD COP10 in Japan, 2010

  6. Result 1: Sub-Global Report under Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Framework • Satoyama Satoumi Ecosystem and Human Well-Being, published by UNU in 2010.

  7. Result 2: CBD Technical Series 61 • Biological and cultural diversity in coastal communities: Exploring the potential of Satoumi for Implementing the Ecosystem Approach in the Japanese Archipelago, published in 2011.

  8. Sato-umi initiative is a bottom-up type activity by local people with special reference to the ecosystem services. • Sato-umi has enough possibilities for the sustainable coastal management in which not only fisheries but human well-being are more focused (Matsuda 2010). • Sato-umi initiative can work in countries/areas where a lot of people are living along the coastal area directly relying upon the marine ecosystem services (Asia-Pacific area, African coastal area, Mediterranean, indigenous communities, etc.) Thank you very much
