Research Governance Committee (Meets every six weeks) TERMS OF REFERENCE - SUMMARY • Promote, encourage and support research with all staff in the Trust. • Consider all research proposals received (following initial screening against the Research Management System by the Associate Medical Director), and make appropriate decisions with regard to approval. • Quality assure and sign-off research governance monitoring outputs prior to consideration by the Trust Research Governance Committee. • Promote and encourage a multidisciplinary research culture in the Trust and with other agencies. • Support the identification of research training needs of staff in the Trust and seek to ensure that these are met. • Liaise with outside bodies that have a statutory or advisory role in research matters. • Monitor funding from commercial and non-commercial funders and ensure that all research funding within the Trust is managed to a high standard of cost-effectiveness and accountability to the public.

Research & Development in Health and Social Care NI Memorandum of Understanding • Signed by Trust Directors March 2009 • An integrated sign-off process for NI • For Research applications involving one or more Trusts • One Trust acts as Lead Trust for Research Governance • Accepted by all other Trusts • Each Trust, on the basis of the Research Governance Report from Lead Trust, issues own approval • Avoids duplication and increases efficiency

Single application for all approvals/permission • Site Specific Assessment Previously undertaken by Office for Research Ethics Committees NI Now responsibility of Trust Research Office
