  1. The Gospel According to Mark part 12“Passing the Mantle of Ministry”Mark 6:1-29

  2. So, couple His teachings with the mighty works He performed, and the people were “Ekplesso,” which means “struck with amazement.”

  3. By their reasoning, Christ could not be the Son of God. They knew His family, and therefore they were offended by His claims and assertions.

  4. Vs 4) “But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”

  5. The Greek word for “marveled” is, “Thaumazo” which means “amazed.” There is only two times recorded in the Gospels of Jesus being amazed. The first, we’ve just seen and it’s not a good amazed.

  6. The second is in Matthew 8:10 “When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed , “Assuredly, I say to you I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”

  7. He equipped them with the unseen thing they needed to take with them, the power of God!

  8. First, He acknowledges there will be those who will not hear. Second, He assures them the fault is not theirs, but lies with the people who reject them.

  9. Third, Sodom and Gomorrah were utterly destroyed by fire and brimstone, yet Christ says it was more tolerable for them than it will be for those who reject the message of the Gospel. Fourth, Jesus is giving them permission to leave, when they are rejected. You cannot force someone to listen, and definitely you cannot make someone believe.

  10. John perfectly understood who he was, and who Christ was; and he was prepared to pass the mantle of ministry over to Jesus. Jesus words in Matthew 11:11a say it all, “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist.”

  11. “Herod” mentioned here, is Herod Antipas. Son of Herod the Great. He controlled the area’s of Galilee and Perea from 4 B.C. to 39 A.D.

  12. John, accused Herod of having an illegal divorce from his wife, and an adulterous relationship with his half brothers wife Herodias, who was the granddaughter of Herod the Great and the sister of Herod Agrippa. (think about that for a moment or two). Gross!

  13. Herodias knew that Herod was a week man, and of low moral character. So, she persuaded her daughter to win the lustful affections of her step father. Herodias’s daughter’s name was Salome, and she danced seductively for Herod. Smitten, he offered her whatever she wanted; to the half of his kingdom.

  14. Herod had been outplayed. His sinful, lustful desires had been used to out maneuver him. The king was sorry, but not repentant. He was chagrin that he had made the oath, but not honorable enough to correct his bad decision.

  15. We cannot masquerade around wearing masks of piousness, because eventually our sins will find us out and we will be exposed. John was sent to pave the way for the Messiah, and he did, and did it well.

  16. The value of the ministry is immeasurable, because it is calculated in terms of people, saved or lost. “What did you do with the mantle of ministry which I entrusted to you?
