  1. Do Now “He told me, if I would be happy, I must lay out no plans for the future. He said, if I behaved myself properly, he would take care of me. Indeed, he advised me to complete thoughtlessness of the future, and taught me to depend solely upon him for happiness” (108) Why would Master Hugh believe this? Why is it so offensive to Douglass? How would you react to being told this?

  2. Chapter 11 DISCUSSION • Why does Douglass have a certain dislike for the Underground Railroad? What was your reaction reading this? • What series of events makes Douglass decide to try and escape again? • One thing to note is: while work gave Douglass a feeling of being free, it temporarily blinded him and made him forget his desire to become actually free.
