Introduction Erasmus Mundus is the international counterpart of the Erasmus programme, which is named after the Dutch scholar Erasmus, who studied in different monastic schools in Europe in the 15th century. Mundus is Latin for world, meaning the name 'Erasmus Mundus programme' stands for the International version of Erasmus programme. It was created on 5 December 2003, and became an official programme on 20 January 2004.
Erasmus Mundus is a mobility programme that aims to: • enhance the quality of European higher education; • promote understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with Third Countries; • contribute to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of Higher education institutions in Third Countries.
EM ECW Erasmus Mundus 2009-2013 continues and extends the scope of the activities already launched during the first phase (2004-2008) of the programme. It now includes the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (EM ECW) scheme, which was launched in 2006 as a complement to the original programme. In addition, the Programme integrates cooperation activities with developed Countries.
Actions Erasmus Mundus 2009-2013 is implemented through of the following actions: • Action 1: Erasmus Mundus joint programmes of outstanding quality at masters (Action 1 A) and doctoral (Action 1 B) levels including scholarships / fellowships to participate in these programmes; • Action 2:Erasmus Mundus Partnerships between European and Third Country higher education institutions including scholarships and fellowships for mobility at all academic levels; • Action 3: Promotion of European higher education through projects to enhance the attractiveness of Europe as an educational destination and a centre of excellence at world level. The Programme Guide contains all the general information and the conditions on how to apply for funding. In addition, regular Calls for Proposals are published for the specific actions.
Jordan’s Experience in EM ECW • Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (EM ECW) Jordan, Syria and Lebanon is an institution-based mobility and scholarship programme organized by 20 universities in Europe, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

Brief description: (1) • The project idea was generated by two main factors: the coordinator’s long-term cooperation with the European universities and the cooperation with several universities in Lot 3. The European partners want to establish mobility with the region and feel the same necessity as Lund: the need of a more systemic and institution-based approach to mobility at all levels. • Important features of the EM ECW are that the programme opens up for mutual exchange and for individuals who have already finished a level of education and want to complete their education in Europe. • Additionally, including group 3 individuals fit very well with the university and national policies of most of the EU partners.
Brief description: (2) • This application includes 11 prestigious European universities and 9 universities from Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. • The third-country partners have all demonstrated, through their willingness and interest in i.e. Tempus programme, that they understand the importance of integration in the knowledge society and that they accept the challenge of globalization and the process of change that it implies. • Lund, together with the consortium members have discussed, designed and planned a mobility scheme, using the guiding principles of the call, that will allow the establishment of more systematic, transparent and effective approach for collaboration
Target groups • Target group 1: Students and academic staff registered in one of the partner universities. • Target group 2: Nationalsfrom Jordan, Syriaor Lebanon registered in any higher education institution not included in the partnership. In addition,nationals from Jordan, Syria or Lebanonworking in public administration, public or private enterprises. • Target group 3:Students holding the nationality of Jordan, Syria or Lebanon having a refugee status or asylum beneficiaries.
Eligibility (1) • Undergraduates are eligible to apply if they have finished at least two years of undergraduate studies. • Masters: are eligible to apply if they have finished their Bachelor programme and have the requested eligibility for the course or programme they are applying for. • PhD’s: are eligible to apply if they have completed a Master programme or have started their PhD studies already. Some universities have special programmes for their PhD students and some special courses that you need to apply for. You need to write 1-2 pages about your research interest and submit to your application.
Eligibility (2) • Post-Doc fellowship: If you already have a contact at a partner university, he or she would probably recommend you to the Steering Committee who will make the final selection. • Academic Staff: Academic staff working at one of the partner universities in the consortium is eligible to apply. You need to contact the partner university coordinator if you don’t already have a colleague at the host university. Academic staff mobility refers exclusively to training, teaching and/or research activities performed by invited academic staff of partner universities in host institutions which are members of the partnership.
How to apply? • In Fields of study a list of available academic courses will appear for all the partner universities. • Select type of scholarship/mobility on your level of education or staff mobility. • Find out what Target group you belong to. • You are advised to apply to more than one university to be able to be considered at all possible universities according to your specialized field of studies.
Selection process (1) • All applicants must fill in the online form. • One original hard copy of the application is to be sent to the applied university. • The university you have applied to will decide whether you are eligible and can be considered for studies at their university. • When all requirements for the preliminary admission are fulfilled, the university you have applied to will notify Lund University and the candidate will be placed on the validated candidates list. • If not nominated to the first hand choice university, Lund University will be notified and the application will be forwarded to the second hand choice university.
Selection process (2) • A selection panel will meet to finalize the list of nominated students and scholars. • Students and scholars will be notified • The list of nominated candidates will be sent to the Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and will include a list of reserves. • When EACEA has approved the list - successful scholars will be directly notified by Lund University and the host university and receive information on formal admission procedures like travel, VISA, scholarship and so on. • The host university will be responsible for further processing of the mobility (admission, visa, payment of scholarship, accrediting degrees, accommodation, tuition etc.).
