  3. My role • School Statistics branch > Knowledge and Analytical Services • Management of the WNT and National data collections • Development and production of associated outputs

  4. Why talk about our data collection?

  5. What is admin data? Admin data are data that are collected for administrative or operational purposes, with statistical use being a secondary purpose.

  13. Process Map Discuss issues and change requirements to ensure that changes are implemented and tested ASAP. This minimises the risk of issues during data collection making it the most efficient and least burdensome for schools, LA’s, consortia and MIS providers. 15. Data providers and MIS developers (2)

  16. Data providers and MIS developers (3) • Ensuring consistency from providers • Through the forum and published on DEWi • Supplier neutral • Queries on any of these items is dealt with by the SIIB Validation modules Guidance Technical specifications Data definitions

  17. Validations DEWi – accepts queries but not errors – schools forces to correct data DEWi – built in cross-file and cross-collection validations • At source • In house

  18. MIS is programmed to extract all the relevant pupils for a collection and schools are not able to remove pupils from a cohort at will. Gaming and Safeguards NDC and WNT, we count Disapplied, Absent and Not-Assessed pupils in the same way as pupils who have achieved lowest marks preventing this from occurring when not appropriate. Remind schools of the data protection act. It is a legal obligation that schools do not intentionally provide inaccurate data. Consequences – breaking the law, monetary fines, repercussions for senior staff. • Data collection can change behaviours. • Performance measures and target setting can motivate ‘gaming’. • Safeguards - no failsafe way to prevent this entirely but we do have ways to make it harder.

  19. Why talk about our data collection? Data is used to inform the public, research, policy and parents, as well as helping define the distribution of funding Despite the initial start up costs, on going costs are low High quality data – validated, high coverage, regular, consistent, reliable We have control over content Only collect data that has a true identified need within WG Reduce burden - Built into systems already used - Ensure data is only collected once - Not intrusive collection process, DEWi – Online Less resource required from us Sets our data collection apart from other collection
