  2. #5 – James Monroe • Born: April 28, 1758 • Birthplace: Westmoreland County, Virginia • Term: 2 (1817-25) • Vice President: Daniel Tompkins • Children: 3;2 girls and 1 boy • Nickname: “Era of Good Feeling President” • Died: July 4, 1831

  3. #5 – James Monroe • A son of a wealthy planter • 1774: entered the college of William and Mary. • 1776: enlisted in the Third Virginia Regiment. • Seriously wounded in the Battle of Trenton. • Served as a colonel. • 1780: unable to obtain a field command, he moved back to Virginia and studied law with Thomas Jefferson.

  4. #5 – James Monroe • 1782: elected to the Virginia House of delegates. • 1783 - 86: elected to the Confederation Congress. • Feb. 16, 1786: married Elizabeth Kortright • 1790: elected a U.S. Senator from Virginia. • 1794: appointed a diplomat to France.

  5. #5 – James Monroe • 1799-1802: served as Governor of Virginia. • 1803-07: appointed minister (diplomat) to Great Britain. • 1808: tried to run for President- Madison received the majority of electoral votes. • 1810: served in the Virginia Assembly. • 1811: elected Governor of Virginia again.

  6. #5 – James Monroe • 1811: appointed Secretary of State by Pres. Madison • 1811: President Madison appoints him as Secretary of War. (He holds two positions) • 1817: elected the 5th President of the U.S. • 1818: Andrew Jackson invades Spanish Florida. He violates Congressional war powers. (Seminole Wars) • Why?

  7. #5 – James Monroe • Only Congress can declare war! • Convention of 1818: this was an agreement with England to set the border between British Canada and The U.S. at the 49 degree north latitude line.

  8. #5 – James Monroe • 1819: Pres. Monroe justifies Jackson’s attack. • Why? • Spain was going to cede Spanish Florida to the U.S. anyway. • 1819: Adams-Onis treaty: Spain cedes, or surrenders, Spanish Florida to the US.

  9. #5 James Monroe • 1820: Missouri Compromise: This admitted Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. This compromise outlawed slavery in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase, north of the 36 degree north latitude line. • Monroe supports this law.

  10. #5 – James Monroe • 1823 : Monroe Doctrine proclaimed: No European country may colonize the America’s. If you do we will stop you! • 1825: does not run a third term. Ends his Presidency. • Retires on an estate in Loudin County, Virginia. • July 4, 1831: died at his daughters house in New York City.
