  2. Parenting Debate • Some parents see spanking as an effective form of discipline • Others see spanking as an unhealthy, and abusive technique • Both sides are well supported by research

Anti-Spanking Parenting • Coercive parental behaviors (including spanking) have been linked to poor social skills in the child (Larzelere et al. 1989) • Models aggression (Larzelere et al. 1989). • May also be unhealthy for the parent (Straus 1996) • In 54% of the cases used in the study the parents regretted spanking their child

  4. Pro-Spanking Parenting • Spanking can actually make other parenting techniques, such as time-outs, more successful (McNeil et al. 1994) • The unwanted behavior is not reduced becausethe child fears the punishment, but because the child is actually learning morals and values (Baumrind 1996) • Brevity

  5. Mediation • “HOW”, not “whether or how often” is the most important question to consider • Use a combination of parenting strategies that are appropriate for the child’s age and cognitive abilities • This may or may not include spanking • Communication and consistency play a major role in the effectiveness of discipline • Know the limits!!!

  6. Conclusion • Spanking is a personal decision that all parents must make • Discipline techniques should be suited to each child’s individual needs • The goal should ALWAYS be promoting healthy development in the child
