Julia Ward Howe • Born : May 27, 1819 in New York City, Died : October 17, 1910 • A collection of poems called “Passion Flowers” was anonymously published in 1854 • She greatly admired the works of William Lloyd Garrison • Her most popular piece, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, was published in 1862 in The Atlantic • This song was inspired by other patriotic songs during the Civil War

In 1868 she co-founded the New England Woman's Club, where she would serve as president of the “New England Woman Suffrage Association.” • Beginning in 1870 she wrote and edited for the Woman’s Journal. • In Boston, she started Mothers’ Peace Day, which is now celebrated as Mother’s Day. • In 1908 she was the first woman admitted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters • She was a huge supporter of women’s rights, abolitionism, and education. • “Massachusetts women as a rule adhere too strongly to old-time conventions.”
