Serfs • Most peasants were serfs or villeins • Serfs labored in the Lord’s household or at work on his domain • Medieval Serfs were peasants who worked his lord’s land and paid him certain dues in return for the use of the land • Medieval Serfs did not receive their land as a free gift for the use of it if they owed certain duties to their masters

  3. Knights • Knighthood was not bestowed purely because a young man was the son of a noble • The duty of a Middle ages Knight was to learn how to fight and to serve their liege Lord according to the Code Of Chivelly • Many steps to achieving a “Knight School!” Strict codes of Conduct dictated the life of a knight during the Middle ages

  4. Merchants • A merchant and a trader were not part of the medieval feudal society, yet they had great influence in it • Merchants in a town often struggled with the lord of the manor, whose land they were making such a great profit upon • While the peasants worked the fields and the lords and ladies of the castle feasted, medieval merchants were sailing the seas around Europe and the Mediterranean

  5. Monks • Monks life based on three vows; The vow of poverty, The vow of Chastity, and The vow of Obedience • The daily life was dedicated to worship, reading, and manual labor. • Monks chose to renounce all worldy life and goods

  6. Key Ideas • The serfs were like slaves to the Kings • A merchant was a trader • A monk was a person who chose to renounce worldly life and goods • A knight would learn how to fight and to serve their liege lord

  7. Questions • What were the tree vows that a monks life was based on? • What was the daily life of a monk? • What were most peasants? • Was a merchant and a trader part of the feudal society? • What was the duty of a knight?
