  4. Vocabulary Strategy:Antonyms • Antonyms are words with opposite meanings Emma’s dog is not large. She is small. Which words are antonyms? Some places are hot and humid in summer, but other places are hot and dry. Which words are antonyms?

  5. Comprehension Skill:Compare and Contrast • Compare: how are things alike • Contrast: how are things different Turn to a friend. How are you alike? How are you different? Compare and Contrast Monarch butterflies and geese.

  6. Text Features:Diagrams • Diagrams use pictures, labels, lines, and arrows to show how something works. • Page 12-13 - What does this diagram help you understand? - How is using the diagram different from reading the text? Read pages 6-17

  10. Grammar:Verbs • Am, is, are, was, were • Verbs tell what someone or something is or was. • Am is only used with the pronoun I • Present Tense: Past Tense: I am I was You are You were He, she, it is They were The boys are in the car already. My friend is Mark. The cats were brown and black.

  11. Writing:Expository Paragraph Draft • First Draft: Topic Sentence: “Have you ever wondered how snow forms?” Add details: Have you ever wondered why it snows? It all begins with cold air and cold clouds. Clouds have water in them. The water comes from lakes and rivers. The water rises up and changes to a gas. For the water to freeze, the air in the clouds must be very cold. When the water freezes, it becomes small bits of ice. The ice bits clump together. When they get heavy enough and the air is cold enough, it snows!

  12. Title: Winter Topic Sentence: Do you like to chill in the winter? Detail 1: In the winter I like to read by the fireplace. My favorite book is Twilight. Detail 2: When it snows I zip and zoom down the front hill on my red shiny sled. Detail 3: After that I mope inside and get cozy with a cup of warm hot chocolate.
