  4. Containment • Policy that involved limiting communism to areas where it already existed

  5. Marshall Plan • 1947 American aid plan for Europe to rebuild • Goal to strengthen democratic governments to lessen appeal of communism

  6. NATONorth Atlantic Treaty Organization • An alliance between western nations to support each other in case of attack • Collective security agreement

  7. Warsaw Pact • Alliance between the Soviet Union and its satellite nations promising military cooperation • Created in response to NATO
