  2. Standards • SS3H2. The student will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded people’s rights and freedoms in a democracy. Explain social barriers, restrictions, and obstacles that these historical figures had to overcome and describe how they overcame them. • SS3G2. The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the historical figures. Describe how each of these historic figures adapted to and was influenced by his/her environment. Trace examples of travel and movement of these historic figures and their ideas across time. • SS3CG2. The student will discuss the character of different historical figures. Explain how the historical figures in SS3H2a used positive character traits to support their beliefs in liberty, justice, tolerance, and freedom of conscience and expression.

  3. Introduction Frederick Douglass was a run away slave that became a famous speechmaker and abolitionist. During his movement toward civil rights he published a newspaper “The North Star” which developed into the most influential black antislavery paper published during the antebellum era. It was used to not only denounce slavery, but to fight for the emancipation of women and other oppressed groups.He also wrote a book about his life and played an important role in the civil war.This webquest will help you find out who Frederick Douglass was and how he impacted our country during a complex time period.

  4. Task For this assignment you will be researching the impact Frederick Douglass had on our country. You can pick from three assignments. .

  5. Task-Assignment 1 Assignment 1: You will transformed back to the 1860’s. To begin you will research the life of Frederick Douglass to develop a powerpoint to persuade the south why everyone is entitled to civil rights. You will present your powerpoint to the lawmakers of the south(the class) to influence their opinion on slavery. Remember to be persuasive you must state your position with detailed reasons. Use the powerpoint template and persuasive brainstorman template to complete your assignment. Remember to use pictures to captivate your audience.

  7. Task-Assignment 3 Assignment 3: After Douglass escaped, he worked tirelessly to promote freedom for all slaves. He published a newspaper in Rochester, New York, called “The North Star.” It got its name because slaves escaped at night by following the North Star. (The publication later became “Frederick Douglass’ Weekly” and was followed by “Douglass’ Monthly.”) The paper’s goal was to, in Douglass’ words, "…abolish slavery in all its forms and aspects, promote the moral and intellectual improvement of the colored people, and hasten the day of freedom to the Three Millions of our enslaved fellow countrymen."
