  1. Transportation Research Group 2013 www.trg.soton.ac.uk • About us • The Transportation Research Group (TRG) has research links across the University, and with other groups in the UK and overseas. • Major activities relate to all aspects of the development, application and understanding of the impacts of a wide range of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) • Principal sponsoring bodies include: • European Commission (EC) • Department for Transport (DfT) • Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) • Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) • Transport for London (TfL) Research Emphasis / Themes Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Human Factors We view transport as a socio-technical system with the potential to deliver sustainability TECHNOLOGY: Vehicles, Infrastructure, Informatics. SOCIETY: Users, Operators, Government. SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS: Economic competitiveness, Climate change, Safety, security and health, Quality of life, Equality of Opportunity. c c c Informing the analysis, planning and design of national infrastructure, through the development and demonstration of new decision support tools, and working with partners in government and industry Aims to measure and evaluate the changes in travel, physical activity and carbon emissions related to Sustrans' “Connect2” programme Seeking a step-change improvement in the engineering, economic and environmental performance of railway track making it fit for a 21st century railway, by developing new techniques for its design, construction and maintenance. Site monitoring of the Itchen Boardwalk, Southampton, as part of the iConnect Survey Our Research Environment / Sustainability Walking and Cycling Public Transport Operations Traffic Management Freight and Goods Movement Intelligent Transport Systems Safety Human Factors c c A 3-year EU-funded project, comprising seven innovative cutting edge urban demonstrations, showcasing improved urban-interurban freight operations in Europe Contributing to defining research requirements for traffic modelling, traffic optimisation and control, positioning and communications systems, multi-modal user networks and evaluation c c c Understanding the extent to which behavioural change in transport habits and practices can be facilitated through the creation of a new form of ‘transport network’, based on extending social networking principles to transport users and their individual vehicles “CO-OPerativeSystEmsfor Intelligent Road Safety” “All Conditions Operations and Innovative Cockpit Infrastructure” Human Factors on the Flight Deck The project aims at demonstrating and evaluating co-operative systems which are based on road-vehicle communication, to provide infrastructure, vehicles and traffic operators with technical intelligence TRG Facilities SUDS (Southampton University Driving Simulator) is an interactive driving simulator with three driving displays and 135 degree driver field-of-view, using in-vehicle driving controls with high-resolution digital sensors and speed-sensitive steering feel The TRG Instrumented Vehicle is equipped with a range of sensors, enabling tests and trials to be carried out in real environments on the road, with safety tests being performed on a private test track Academic Staff John PrestonProfessor of Rail Transport, Head of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering and Science Unit Nick HounsellProfessor of Highways and Transport, Director of TRG Neville Stanton Professor of Human Factors in Transport Mike McDonald Emeritus Professor of Transportation Engineering Tom Cherrett Senior Lecturer Ben Waterson Lecturer Contact Professor Nick Hounsell, Transportation Research Group, CMEES, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, University of Southampton Tel. +44 (0 23 8059 3705,  n.b.hounsell@soton.ac.uk http://www.trg.soton.ac.uk/
