  1. Sophomore Year Opportunities

  2. Scholarships • Even if you may not have gotten a scholarship your freshman year, there are still scholarships out there that might help you pay for some of your college education • Scholarships are good not just for the money, but also for the honor and recognition

  3. Pickering Foreign Affairs Scholarship • Up to $40,000 for senior year of undergrad and first year of grad • Two paid internship with state department • Recipients must agree to serve as foreign services officer for three years after graduate school • Apply in your junior year

  4. Truman Scholarship • Scholarship for campus “change agents” who are planning to work in government, education, or the non-profit or public sector • Covers tuition for up to $30,000 for graduate school • Applied for in junior year

  5. Critical Language Scholarships • Summer language institutes offered through the state department • Immersion program • Students take away one year of a language • Offered in “critical languages” (NOT Spanish or French)

  6. Gilman Scholarship • Study-abroad scholarship • Must be for courses taken abroad • Up to $5,000 per semester • Pell recipients only

  7. NASA MUST • 10-week Summer internship offered through NASA • Paid • Must be member of underrepresented group (women, ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities) • Must be a STEM major • NASA also offers scholarships

  8. SMART • SMART = Science, Math, & Research for Transformation • A scholarship run out of the Department of Defense • Awardees must participate in summer internship with DoD • Awardees must work with DoD after graduation • Must be participating in major in STEM

  9. Udall Scholarship • Tuition scholarship awarded to sophomore and junior level students • Awarded to students who are pursuing careers in the environment OR Native American students pursuing careers related to tribal policy or Native American healthcare

  10. NOAA Hollings/EPP Scholarship • Academic scholarships given to college sophomores • Must be majoring in an area that is related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education • (biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education)

  11. Department of Homeland Security • Scholarship available to students in STEM based field • Applicants must demonstrate research interest in homeland security • Recipients must complete a ten week internship during scholarship period • Recipients must work for a branch of homeland security for one year after graduation • Students may not study abroad with scholarship

  12. Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship Program • Provides students with internships, study abroad experience, two fully-supported summer institutes in DC, language training, and money for graduate school • Some need-based scholarship support is available

  13. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program • 6 Week program at Howard • Focused on foreign relations • Offers courses as well as visits to government and non-governmental organization • A really good opportunity for people interested in international affairs

  14. EPA GRO • Open to many areas for research pertaining to the Environmental Protection Agency • Science, engineering, math, social science, computer science, interdisciplinary areas • Up to $10,000 a semester for tuition, plus stipend, internship, and additional expenses

  15. Alpha Lambda Delta Scholarships • ALD gives three types of scholarships • Trow gives students up to $6,000 for their junior year • Stemler gives $1,000 for study abroad
