  2. Early Beginnings • Born around 1864 • Born near Diamond, Missouri • Kidnapped by Confederate Raiders as a baby • Both parents died • Adopted by Moses and Susan Carver • Earned nickname “Plant Doctor"

  3. Education • Moved to Kansas at age 12 to attend school • Attended Minneapolis High School • At age 30, he was accepted into college • Iowa Agricultural College • Graduated with: • Bachelor of Science Degree in 1894 • Masters Degree in 1897

  4. A Wonderful Teacher • Became first black faculty member of Iowa College • Taught classes about soil conservation • In 1879, moved to Tuskegee Institute • Director of Agriculture

  5. A Brilliant Man • Developed crop rotation method • Invented over 325 products from peanuts • Invented more than 100 products from sweet potatoes • Invented over 75 products from pecans
