  4. Quick keys for using PowerPoint • There are a few different “toolbars” on your screen that we will be using today. The toolbar near the bottom of the screen contains “quick keys” for colour, text, 3-D, images, drawing. • The “toolbar” on the top of the screen also contains the functions for colour, text, et cetera, but it also has functions for saving and editing your work. • Using these “toolbars” is the quickest way to create your presentation Adrian Zuyderduyn

Adding text to your presentation • All of the text boxes you create will say “Click to add text,” so click on the box and add in your desired text. • To change the size and font of your text, place the mouse in front of the text, click and hold down the left button on the mouse, and drag it across the text to highlight it. Once this is highlighted, you can choose what you want to do to the text. • To change the size of your text, highlight the text you want to re-size and find the function on the top toolbar that contains the letter size. Click on the arrow that points down and choose a new size for your text. • To change the font size of your text, highlight the text you want to re-size and find the function on the top toolbar that contains the different fonts (it should be under Times New Roman right now). Click on the arrow that points down and choose a new font for your text. Adrian Zuyderduyn

Adding colour to yourtext and background • To add colour to the background of the page, go under “Format” on the top toolbar, then click on “Background.” Click on the arrow that points down and choose a new colour. Click “Apply” and the background colour will change. • To change the colour of your text, highlight the text and find the function on the bottom toolbar that is a capital “A” with a black line underneath. Click on the arrow to the right and choose a new colour by clicking on it. Your text should now be a different colour. • To change the colour within a text box, click on the text box so you get little white boxes in the corners. On the bottom toolbar there is a function that is a paint can with liquid pouring out. Click on the arrow to the right of this function and choose a new colour by clicking on it. To add a new slide to your presentation, go under “Insert” on the upper toolbar and choose “New Slide” Choose one of the 12 options and click on “OK” To place a new slide between two existing slides, click on the existing slide that you want the new one to follow, then repeat the same procedure to create the new slide Adding new slidesto your presentation Adrian Zuyderduyn

Adding Clip Art • To add an image from the computer’s Clip Art file, go under “Insert,” then “Picture,” then “Clip Art” • Choose a category from the Clip Art gallery and insert the picture onto your slide • To increase or decrease the size of the image, click on the image and stretch it by dragging the corners outwards or inwards Adrian Zuyderduyn

Adding Word Art • To add Word Art to your slide, click on the little blue capital “A” on the bottom toolbar • Select a Word Art style and click on “OK” • Type in your desired text and click “OK” • Increase or decrease the size of your text the same way as with Clip Art Word Art Adrian Zuyderduyn

Adding a chart To add a chart to your slide, go under “Insert,” then “Chart” Change what you want within the cells of the chart to create your own figures To edit the chart, click on it, then right-click using the mouse Choose “Chart Object,” and then choose “Edit” Make the necessary adjustments to your chart Adrian Zuyderduyn

To add an image from the Internet, log on to Netscape Navigator and go to the OKM School Website Go under “Student Pages” and right-click your mouse button on the image at the top Choose “Save Image As” and save it under your H: drive (you’ll find this by clicking on the arrow beside “My Documents”) Return to your PowerPoint slide and go under “Insert” on the top toolbar, then under “Picture,” then under “From File” Click on “Insert” and the image should appear on your slide You can make the image larger or smaller by clicking on it and dragging one of the corners until the size is correct Adding text and imagesfrom the Internet Adrian Zuyderduyn

  12. Adding a Hyperlinkto the Internet • To add a hyperlink to the Internet (a glorified link), go under “Insert” and choose “Hyperlink”ca.yahoo.com • Type in the address of the website and click “OK” • The finished version will look like this: http://www.sd23.bc.ca/ Adrian Zuyderduyn

Adding new transitionsbetween your slides • This is an interesting way to introduce your next slide in a visual way • Go under “Slide Show” and “Slide Transition” • Choose the type of your transition by bringing up the list of options and choosing one • You can also choose the speed of the transition by clicking on the appropriate box • You can add sound (if your computer has speakers) • You can also choose to have the slide change after a certain amount of time has passed Adrian Zuyderduyn

To add a new text box, go under “Insert” and choose “Text Box” Follow the regular format for filling text into this new box To add a new chart, go under “Insert” and choose “Chart” Follow the regular format for building the right chart with the proper figures Adding new text boxes and tables Adrian Zuyderduyn

  16. Adding Names, Dates, and Time • To add a number, date, and time to your slides, go under “View” and choose “Header and Footer” • Choose the options you’d like to see on your presentation and click “Apply” or “Apply to All” Adrian Zuyderduyn

Previewing Your Presentation • To preview all of your slides, go under “View” and choose “Slide Sorter” • This shows you all of your slides, and you can add new effects • Click on one of your slides and choose a different animation or “effect” (this will bring your text in from different areas • Click on the little stopwatch on the top toolbar and you can rehearse the timing of your slide transition (so when you are done talking, the slide will automatically change to the next one) Adrian Zuyderduyn

  18. Viewing your presentation • To view your presentation, go under “Slide Show” and choose “View Show” • To move from one slide to the next, either click on your mouse or press the spacebar (unless you have programmed each slide to change after a certain period of time) Adrian Zuyderduyn

Saving your workonto the computer • To save your work, go under “File” and choose “Save” • Save your presentation under your file in the H: drive, making sure to give the file an appropriate name • To work on your presentation at a later time, call up the file and continue working Adrian Zuyderduyn
