  1. Unit 7 Day 9 Anatomy The only normal people are the ones you don’t know very well. Foe Ancis

  2. Today’s Agenda • Review hormone traits • Notes on types of hormones • Endocrine system coloring

  3. Endocrine System

  4. What makes a chemical a hormone? • 1. Endocrine gland • 2. Blood stream • 3. Target cells

  5. What are the three types of hormones?

  6. Classification of Hormones • Steroid Hormones – fat soluble, made from cholesterol. • Ex. Sex hormones • Protein Hormones – made from amino acids, usually from tyrosine, smaller than steroid hormones. • Peptide Hormones- chains of amino acids • Very diverse group

  7. Two types of hormone action • Steroid hormones • Peptide hormones

  8. Steroid

  9. Label your diagram • 1. Steroid Hormone • 2. Hormone receptor • 3. Hormone and receptor attach to a specific region of the chromosome. • 4. DNA transcribed to mRNA • 5. mRNA translated into a protein

  10. Example • 1. Steroid Hormone-Testosterone • 2. Hormone receptor-in lip cell • 3. Hormone and receptor attach to a specific region of the chromosome. Containing Hair Instructions • 4. DNA transcribed to mRNA • 5. mRNA translated into a protein- Hair

  11. protein hormone

  12. TM 84 Boxes • Protein Hormone (top box) • Glycogen (lower left) • Glucose (lower right)

  13. Protein Hormones • Much faster action than steroid hormones • Do not enter the target cell • Ex. Adrenalin

  14. Doesn’t have to enter the cell to cause action

  15. GTP releases energy

  16. Negative feedback

  17. Hormones and their glands

  18. Obj. 18

  19. Your opinion? • Growth hormone is now available as a prescribed treatment. Should doctors be allowed to give it to anyone desiring to be taller?
