  1. Concentration of Solutions

  2. What is concentration? Concentration The measurement that describes the amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent.

  3. A concentratedsolution contains a large amount of solute for the amount of solvent. A diluted solution contains a large amount of solvent for the amount of solute. To concentrate a solution, one must add more solute, or reduce the amount of solvent. By contrast, to dilute a solution, one must add more solvent, or reduce the amount of solute.

  4. These glasses containing red dye demonstrate qualitative changes in concentration. The solutions on the left are more dilute, compared to the more concentrated solutions on the right.

  5. Measurements of Concentration • The most commonly used measurements of concentration are molarity, molality, and mole fraction. • Molarity (M) The number of moles of solute dissolved in each liter of solution (most important) Molarity= Moles of solute Liters (L) of solution

  6. Molarity Practice Problems 1. If a manufacturer prepares a solution from 10.0 grams of NaOH dissolved in enough solvent to make 0.100 liter of solution, what is the molarity of the cleaner?

  7. 2. What is the molarity of a solution formed by mixing 10.0 g H2SO4 with enough water to make 100 mL of solution?

  8. 3. Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid. What is the molarity of the solution produced when 125 g of acetic acid (C2H4O2 ) is dissolved in sufficient water to prepare 1.50 L of solution?
