  1. Inventors and the Rise of Big Business Utilizing the Text: Chapter 8, Supplementary Readings

  2. Standards: SS5H3: The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century. What does this standard indicate what fifth graders must master to show understanding of this content? Element b: Describe the impact on American life of the Wright brothers (flight), George Washington Carver (science), Alexander Graham Bell (communication), and Thomas Edison (electricity).

  3. Lesson Objective and Essential Question Day 1 • Objective: Students will identify and describe in paragraph form an inventor and his impact on American society. • Essential Question: Describe how the inventors during the early 1900's impact the lives of Americans.

  4. Some of you might be thinking….What is the big deal, that was then and this is now! Your job today is to discover what is so important about these inventors from the 1900’s. What did they invent? Why should we care? How is it what they created has become important to American Society ? Using your sharp, keen reading and detecting skills, your graphic organizer, your fluency partner, and your incredible inference skills to solve this case. Determine why these inventors are important in history.

  5. Steps to solve this case Read the text with your fluency partner. As your reading, locate the answers to the questions in your graphic organizer. (Be prepared to discuss and show where you came up with your answers as teachers circulate around) Write your answers in sentence form on your graphic organizer. Be sure you model your sentence writing strategy! (Use your question in the beginning) Be sure to capitalize and punctuation your sentence (s) correctly. You may use your text book as a resource if you would like an additional text resource. (Wright Brothers: 332, Carver: 209, Bell: 259, Edison 264-265)

Include an illustration about that inventor in the space provided.   10. So now you thinking…I have got this historical investigation thing down….well let’s see if we can separate the “men from the boys!” What learning partners will rise to the top today? Again your job is to discover what is so important about these inventors from the 1900’s. What did they invent? Why should we care? How is what they created, important to American Society in the 1900’s, and even today? Using your reading skills, your graphic organizer, your fluency partner, and your incredible inference skills to solve this case. Determine why these inventors are so important in history!
