  3. Nature of Work An editor’s primary job is self explanatory. The editor edits the work of writers prior to publication. There are many subsets of editing, such as editing for a magazine, book publisher, journal, or specific types of editing like freelance editing and copy editing. The main focus of the editor is to refine the ideas of the writer through technical aspects and thematic aspects. Editors can plan out the publishing process of a newspaper, magazine, or journal, and editors that work for book publishers often follow their books for the publishing process along with proposing which projects to buy the publishing rights from. Editors often use computers and publishing software to do the majority of their editing, and office hours can range from the average to off-set depending on the type of editor and whether or not they are self-employed, which can occur with freelance editing.

  4. Education and Training While writing books requires no formal degrees, editing in general requires at least a basic bachelor’s degree or higher. Editing for a book publisher in fiction can take any type of bachelor’s degree. A general preference among the editing field in general is for a degree in communications, English, or journalism. New editors often train under older, more experienced editors. Training involves reading unsolicited manuscripts and taking on a few clients to start with. Editors will often start off with a writer who is already established along with new writers to determine their abilities and skill level in the field.

  5. Other Qualifications Needed An editor must be able to enjoy writing and reading, and they must be able to express ideas clearly and logically. An editor must also be able to determine what is and isn’t fit to be published. This is present on both a level of quality and a level of appropriateness that includes but is not limited to recognizing plagiarized material or material containing false information. An editor must be able to enjoy writing and reading, and they must be able to express ideas clearly and logically. An editor must also be able to determine what is and isn’t fit to be published. This is present on both a level of quality and a level of appropriateness that includes but is not limited to recognizing plagiarized material or material containing false information. Advancement in book publishing often follows a normal route, with newer editors reading more slush submissions and not doing as much heavy duty work. Building a reputation does also assist in editorial advancement.

  6. Job Outlook/Future Prospects 281,300 jobs in 2008 were authorial and editorial jobs. Editors make up slightly less than half of these positions. About half of this amount worked in the publishing industry in some form. Many editors were also employed in multiple ways for their job. About 12% of editors were self employed. Due to the rise of the internet and other forms of communication, an editor is more likely to be able to be employed despite not living in an entertainment hub like New York City. The concentration still suggests that a majority of editors working in book publishing live in centers like this city. There is a high sense of competition in the industry because of the chosen profession, and industry growth is supposed to grow as fast as average. Freelance editing has a potentially higher growth than normal because of the advent of the self-publishing industry.

  7. Potential Earnings (Now and Future) The median wage for editors is almost $50,000, but the middle range of editors makes anywhere from slightly over $38,000 to slightly over $69,000. At the lowest range, most editors make below $30,000. At the highest 10% of the industry, editors can make upwards of $90,000. These numbers are fairly accurate but do not take into account the potential earnings for freelance editing, which can range due to being a more self-reliant salary and work schedule than editing for a traditional publisher or newspaper.

  9. Historic Career Exploration Loan Officers/Bank Managers

  10. Nature of Work Loan officers and bank managers mainly work with the different types of loans associated with banks. They can contact people and businesses to see if they need new loans and use the information from loan applicants to help get them loan. Loan officers/managers use a process called underwriting to get people loans. The process involves a knowledge of loans and computer software. Other skills are used as well, as officers/manages are required to use a lot of customer service and social aspects to get customers to take out loans with their institution.

  11. Education & Training The minimal education for a loan officer is a high school education. Some positions for loan officers require bachelors degrees in business or finance, but others simply require a GED. A business education is preferable because loan officers need to analyze financial statements. Training for the job is on-the-job and is required of most loan officer positions. Training occurs regularly via courses such as software training courses.

  12. Other Qualifications Needed Many loan officers also require licenses. Licenses are distributed annually and come from passing a certain amount of coursework and an exam. Certification from banking schools and association is also a must. Loan officers and managers must also have a high level of work experience in their field. Loan officers must be able to make decisions and sell their product to consumers. They also must be able to work one-on-one with customers to better sell loans to them.

  13. Job Outlook/Future Prospects The recovery period of the current economy allows for an increased amount of loans being underwritten. As the demand for loans increases, more loan officers and managers will be needed to supply it to customers. Improvements in the field software will lower the amount hired to an extent. Employment growth in the next twenty years is projected to be about 14%. This is around an average employment growth rate.

  14. Potential Earnings (Now & Future) The current median wage is upwards of $50,000 within the field. The lowest ten percent of individuals made a little more than $30,000, while the highest ten percent made above $100,000. In the next ten years, the wage outlook is expected to inflate the average amount along with the regular employment. The payment between careers within the field vary on the level on the education, the type of loans the officer/manager works with, where the employee works, and how their employer pays them (some a flat fee, others on commission.)
